Working Holidays as a Nurse or Health Professional

The holidays can be a wonderful time to connect with loved ones and celebrate traditions, but for nurses and health professionals, it often comes with unique challenges—long shifts, staffing shortages, and the emotional toll of caring for others. Whether you’re scheduled to work or have time off, finding rest and creating healthy boundaries is essential for your well-being during this season.

1. Prioritize Rest and Recovery

Amid the holiday rush, sleep and self-care can easily fall by the wayside. Protect your downtime as much as possible by creating a bedtime routine and sticking to it. Even short bursts of rest—like a 15-minute nap or a moment to practice deep breathing—can restore your energy and focus. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

2. Set Realistic Boundaries

It’s okay to say no. Whether it’s an invitation to yet another holiday event or picking up extra shifts, recognize your limits. Politely decline commitments that feel overwhelming or drain your energy. Instead, focus on activities and connections that bring you joy and peace.

3. Celebrate in Meaningful Ways

If you’re working during the holidays, find small ways to celebrate on or around your shift. Share festive treats with colleagues, add a little holiday cheer to your workspace, or schedule a post-holiday celebration with loved ones. If you have the day off, keep the focus on what matters most—connection, laughter, and gratitude—rather than perfection.

4. Make Time for Yourself

Amid caring for others, it’s easy to forget about yourself. Take a moment to reflect on what you need to feel rested and joyful this season. Whether it’s soaking in a warm bath, reading a favorite book, or watching your go-to holiday movie, carve out time for those small, restorative activities.

5. Give Yourself Grace

The holiday season is often portrayed as a time of nonstop joy, but it’s okay if you feel tired, stressed, or even a bit disconnected. Acknowledge those feelings without judgment and remember that you’re doing your best.

This season, prioritize what fills you up and supports your health—mentally, emotionally, and physically. By protecting your rest and honoring your boundaries, you can enjoy the holidays, no matter where you find yourself: at home or on the hospital floor.

Wishing you a season bright and full of joy ✨
